Practice what your range won't let you

Augmented Defender turns your home into a mixed-reality training space for Meta Quest. Move on your own feet, shoot on the move, draw, reload and rack the slide. No live ammunition, no subscription.

Try it with the controllers you already have. It's a one-time purchase, a low-risk way to start compared with subscription training apps. Let us prove its value to you before you spend anything on hardware.

The problem with the lane

Standing still builds the wrong habits

Most public ranges ban moving, drawing and fast strings. So the skills that matter most never get practiced, and that has a cost.

Freezing

The first time you have to move and shoot at once shouldn't be the time it counts.

Lane-only habits

Skills built standing still at a bench don't hold up when you're moving through a house.

Months between reps

When practice means a drive, a wait for a lane, a lane fee and a box of ammo, it happens a few times a year, and every trip comes out of time with your family.

What you get

Everything a range lane can't give you

Move like it matters

Shoot on the move, step from position to position and work the doorways of your own home, on your own feet.

Draw, reload, rack the slide

Holster draws, physical magazine changes and slide racks with our XR controllers, or by hand with your Quest controller.

Minutes, not trips

Ten minutes in the living room counts. No drive, no wait for a lane, no lane fee, no ammo, and you're still home for dinner.

Measure it

Times, hits and scores on every drill, so you can see yourself get faster.

Time and money

Trigger time every day, without trading away family time

A range trip is the drive, the wait for a lane, the lane fee and the ammo, and it comes out of your evenings and weekends. There's only so much time and money, so something gets sacrificed, and too often it's time with your family.

Augmented Defender puts the daily reps at home: fifteen minutes before work or after the kids are in bed, and you're still home for dinner. Keep your range trips for what only live fire can teach.

Count your own time and costs

A daily rep at home

  • No drive and no wait for a lane
  • No lane fee and no ammo
  • Fifteen minutes, whenever the house is quiet
  • Every drill timed and scored, so short sessions add up
Mixed reality

Your hallway is the training ground

Augmented Defender scans your home and builds the training around your real walls, doors and furniture. You see your own rooms; the targets and threats appear in them.

  • Targets down your hallway and through your doorways
  • A virtual range seen through your real windows
  • Shooting areas you walk between, with a penalty if you step over the fault line
  • Timed drills, scored runs and courses you build yourself

Why we built it

We were stuck in that lane too

We know how frustrating it is when you want real practice and your range tells you to stand still and shoot paper. So we built the practice space we wanted.

  • Drills adapted from military and law-enforcement qualification courses
  • Timed transition, reload and manipulation drills
  • Open hardware: free XR Pistol print files on GitHub

Works with the gear you have

Start with the Quest controllers you have. Already own a training handset? If it's on the list below, it works here: no subscription, no extra cost. Once you're training regularly, we strongly recommend a holster and inert, weighted training magazines, so draws and reloads build the real motion. Replicas and haptics add more.

  • Quest controllers
  • XR Pistol
  • 3D-printable stocks
  • Ace handset
  • bHaptics
  • ProTube
What we won't compromise

We won't build bad habits

Under stress, you do what you've practiced. Every shortcut a training game hands you becomes a habit you carry into the real world, so we left them out on purpose.

You move with your feet

No teleporting, no thumbstick walking, no snap turns. In the real world your feet are all you have, so that's all you get here. Every position you shoot from, you walked to.

Reloads work like the real gun

Drop the magazine with the release, seat a fresh one, work the slide. With our XR controllers you swap inert, weighted training magazines and draw from a real holster.

One controller, one gun

Each controller is a gun, held the way you'd hold the real one: strong hand on the grip, support hand wrapped around it. Carry a rifle slung and a pistol holstered and transition between them, just like the real thing. What we won't do is fake one gun across two controllers. It can't teach a real grip.

If that's not for you, that's fine. Plenty of games will let you teleport. Augmented Defender is for people who want their practice to carry over to the real thing.

How it works

Three steps to your first rep

Get it on Meta Quest

Already have a Quest? One purchase, no subscription. Start with your Quest controllers.

Scan your room

Your walls, doors and furniture become the course.

Start moving

Walk the course, draw, reload and track your times.

Then gear up

Once it's part of your routine, add the gear that makes the reps carry over: a holster and inert, weighted training magazines (strongly recommended), and an XR training controller that holds your Quest controller in a full-size frame. Have a 3D printer? The XR Pistol print files are free.

Range vs. home

What does a year of range practice really cost?

Lane fees, ammo and drive time add up, and most of it is spent standing still. Run your own numbers.

Why Augmented Defender

Real practice shouldn't depend on range rules

At Augmented Defense, we believe the skills that matter most in a defensive situation are the ones most ranges won't let you practice. You can stand in a lane and put rounds on paper, but you can't move between positions, draw from the holster, reload on the move or work a doorway. Classes that allow it cost hundreds and fill up fast. That leaves a lot of responsible gun owners quietly unsure how they'd perform if it ever counted.

Augmented Defender, our mixed-reality game for Meta Quest, fixes that. It scans your home and turns your real rooms into a training space: targets appear through your doorways, threats come down your hallway, and every drill is timed and scored. You train with a controller or a replica, with no live ammunition anywhere, and it never teaches shortcuts: you move with your feet, reload with your hands and hold one gun the way you'd hold the real one. It's a one-time purchase with no subscription. Get it on Meta Quest, scan your room, and start practicing what your range won't let you.
